John Albert Barker




* John Albert Barker

Born 1900 Wallsend,NSW.

Occupation Coalminer,Abermain,NSW

Enlisted in the AIF on the 27th July, 1916 at Newcastle,NSW.

35th Battalion, D Coy. Rank Private. Service/Regimental Number 2534.

Age 18, 7 months ? ( 16 years old)

Embarked Sydney, NSW on the ship O.C. "Ascanius" on the 25th October, 1916.

Disembarked Devonport on the 28th December, 1916.

Proceeded overseas to France on the 15th March, 1917.

Marched out from Estaples on the 3rd April, 1917.

Went to the field on the 4th April, 1917.

Killed in Action on the 7th June, 1917 in the field, Belgium.

Buried Toronto Avenue Cemetery 1 1/2 miles south of Messines, France.

Holliday, C Company, 35th Battalion, at memorial erected near Ash crater to membersof the 35th Battalion, who fell at the battle of Messines on the 7th June, 1917. A memorial similiar to this one less the names was erected by the Battalion Pioneers near Gooseberry Farm, just west of Messines, in June 1917 but was destroyed by enemy shellfire.
